As part of the training course “Re(don’t) think. Travel! Leaving positive traces for a just and sustainable future”, IYNF trainer Francesco Mangiarini delivered a session on carbon offsetting.
The training focused on the understanding of the definitions of carbon offsetting and greenwashing, and it exposed South Pole, a company that is offsetting carbon emissions for its customers by selling carbon credits.
Definitions:
- Carbon offsetting is a compensatory measure made by an individual or company for carbon emissions, usually through sponsoring activities or projects which increase carbon dioxide absorption, such as tree planting.
- Greenwashing is is an attempt by businesses to seem environmentally friendly without actually doing anything serious to protect the environment.
